Canada Unveils National AI Strategy, Warns Against Foreign Dominance in Technology Sector

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has launched a new national AI strategy, warning that excessive dependence on foreign technology platforms could threaten Canada’s economic and digital sovereignty.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has unveiled an ambitious national artificial intelligence strategy aimed at strengthening domestic AI capabilities while reducing the country’s dependence on foreign technology companies. The move comes amid growing global competition in artificial intelligence and increasing concerns over data security, economic influence, and technological sovereignty.

During the announcement, Carney warned that foreign AI platforms could potentially shape Canadian markets, influence public systems, and gain access to sensitive national data. He stressed that Canada must develop stronger domestic AI infrastructure to avoid becoming overly reliant on international technology giants.

The newly launched “AI for All” strategy includes major investments in computing infrastructure, AI research, digital training, and support for local technology firms. The Canadian government is expected to establish a technology growth fund worth nearly C$500 million to encourage innovation and strengthen homegrown AI companies.

Officials stated that the strategy aims to increase AI adoption among businesses, improve public trust in artificial intelligence systems, and generate nearly 250,000 new jobs by 2031. The government also plans to develop a public AI supercomputer and expand AI literacy initiatives through schools, colleges, and community programs.

Carney highlighted concerns that global AI development is currently dominated by a handful of powerful international corporations and countries, creating risks for smaller economies. He said Canada intends to work with allied democracies to build secure and ethical AI systems while protecting national interests.

Experts believe the strategy reflects a broader global shift as countries race to secure technological independence and establish stronger regulatory control over artificial intelligence. Analysts say governments worldwide are increasingly viewing AI not only as an economic tool but also as a matter of national security and geopolitical influence.
