The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast an active spell of monsoon rainfall across Maharashtra until July 7, bringing the possibility of moderate to heavy showers in several parts of the state. The fresh weather system is expected to provide much-needed relief after an inconsistent start to the monsoon season and weeks of below-normal rainfall in many districts.
According to the IMD, yellow alerts have been issued for multiple districts, including parts of Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra and adjoining regions, where isolated heavy rainfall is likely over the coming days. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds may also occur in some areas, prompting authorities to advise residents to remain cautious during periods of intense rainfall.
Weather officials said the strengthening of the southwest monsoon is expected to improve rainfall activity across the state, although the intensity may vary from region to region. The rainfall is likely to benefit agriculture by improving soil moisture and supporting sowing operations that were delayed due to an uneven monsoon onset. However, officials have also warned of the possibility of waterlogging in low-lying areas and reduced visibility during heavy showers.
Residents have been advised to monitor official weather updates, avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain, and exercise caution near rivers, streams and landslide-prone areas. Motorists are also urged to drive carefully, as slippery roads and poor visibility could increase the risk of accidents. Local administrations have been directed to remain prepared for any weather-related emergencies.
While heavy rainfall is expected during the first week of July, the IMD has noted that overall rainfall for the month may still remain below the long-term average in several parts of the country. Nevertheless, the upcoming spell is expected to significantly improve weather conditions across Maharashtra and provide relief to regions that have experienced a rainfall deficit since the beginning of the monsoon season.
