Doctors at the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial (YCM) Hospital and Post Graduate Institute have successfully removed a massive 20.1-kilogram malignant ovarian tumour from a 60-year-old woman during a complex five-hour surgery, marking a significant achievement in public healthcare.
The patient, a resident of rural Pune district, had noticed a small abdominal swelling nearly six months ago. However, after private hospitals reportedly estimated the surgery would cost more than ₹5 lakh, she was unable to seek immediate treatment. By the time she reached YCM Hospital, the tumour had grown to approximately 50 x 30 x 20 centimetres, severely affecting her ability to walk, eat and breathe comfortably.
Doctors led by Dr. Santosh Thorat, Head of the Department of Surgery, first focused on stabilising the patient’s condition. As she was suffering from severe malnutrition and protein deficiency, she received intensive nutritional support, albumin infusions and corrective treatment before being considered fit for surgery. The multidisciplinary medical team then carried out the challenging operation, carefully separating the tumour from major blood vessels and surrounding organs while ensuring the patient’s stability throughout the procedure.
Subsequent laboratory analysis confirmed that the growth was bilateral mucinous cystadenocarcinoma, a rare form of malignant ovarian tumour. Following the successful surgery, the patient spent two days in the intensive care unit before being shifted to the general surgical ward. Hospital officials said she is recovering well, has resumed an oral diet and continues to show encouraging progress.
The entire treatment was provided free of cost under the Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Jan Arogya Yojana, highlighting the role of government healthcare institutions in delivering advanced, life-saving medical services. Hospital authorities said the successful outcome reflects the expertise of its multidisciplinary specialists and the growing capability of civic hospitals to perform highly complex surgical procedures.
