Rescue operations at the collapsed administrative building near the Moshi Waste-to-Energy plant entered a crucial phase on Friday, with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) leading efforts to stabilise the damaged structure before attempting to reach the workers believed to be trapped inside. Authorities said the operation is being carried out with extreme caution due to the risk of further structural collapse.
Officials said a significant portion of the building collapsed after being impacted by a massive garbage mound, severely weakening its foundation and leaving the remaining structure unstable. Before rescue personnel can safely enter the building, technical teams are systematically removing hazardous sections using breaker machines, while JCBs, Poclain excavators and other heavy equipment are clearing the debris from the site.
According to the NDRF, the current access route into the building is too narrow and unsafe for rescue personnel. The operation has therefore been divided into phases, with the immediate priority being to reduce pressure on the damaged structure, create a secure access corridor and eliminate the risk of secondary collapses before teams move inside.
The rescue mission is being jointly undertaken by the NDRF, Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), PMRDA Fire Department, police, disaster management authorities and several other emergency response agencies. Additional machinery, specialised equipment and trained personnel have been deployed as officials continue to assess the site’s condition in real time.
NDRF Commandant Praveen Dhatte said every step of the operation is being executed after careful planning to avoid unnecessary risks to both rescuers and those trapped beneath the debris. PCMC Commissioner Dr. Vijay Suryavanshi, who has been monitoring the operation on-site, directed all departments to provide immediate logistical and technical support to accelerate the rescue while ensuring the highest standards of safety. Authorities said the rescue operation will continue until every trapped individual is accounted for.
