Pune Sizzles Under October Heat; Temperature Expected to Touch 36–37°C

Pune is witnessing an unusually hot October, with temperatures rising 3–4°C above normal and the IMD forecasting 36–37°C in the coming days.

Pune: Pune is experiencing an unusually hot October, with daytime temperatures rising significantly above the seasonal average. The city’s maximum temperature has climbed into the mid-30s, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting temperatures of 36°C to 37°C over the next few days.

Pune Records Unusually High October Temperatures

The Shivajinagar weather station recorded a maximum temperature of 35.7°C on Tuesday, making it the eighth-highest October maximum recorded at the station. The temperature remained high at 35.2°C on Wednesday.

The heat is being felt across Pune. On Wednesday, Lohegaon recorded 35.8°C, Chinchwad 35.2°C, Pashan 34.4°C, NDA 33.8°C and Magarpatta 33.6°C.

Temperatures 3–4°C Above Normal

According to the IMD, daytime temperatures in Pune are currently around 3°C to 4°C above normal for this period.

The city’s rising temperatures come after the southwest monsoon withdrew from Maharashtra earlier than usual this year. The absence of monsoon winds, dry air and clear skies have contributed to increased daytime heating.

El Niño Also a Contributing Factor

Weather experts have also pointed to the influence of El Niño conditions as one of the factors associated with the unusually warm post-monsoon period.

Previous El Niño years have also seen elevated October temperatures in Pune. However, local atmospheric conditions, particularly dry weather and clear skies, remain important factors behind the current heat spell.

36–37°C Forecast for Coming Days

The IMD has forecast maximum temperatures between 36°C and 37°C over the next few days. If Pune reaches 37°C, the current spell could rank among the city’s more extreme October heat events.

The October record at Shivajinagar remains significantly higher, with historical data showing an October maximum of 37.8°C recorded on October 8, 1899.

Residents Face Hotter Afternoons

The combination of high daytime temperatures and relatively warm mornings and nights is increasing discomfort for residents.

With dry weather expected to continue, residents are likely to experience hotter afternoons over the coming days. Citizens are advised to remain hydrated and limit unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day.
