A major controversy has erupted in Chhattisgarh’s Bharatmala highway project after a family allegedly received compensation nearly 17 times higher than the original amount during land acquisition for the economic corridor project.
Fresh details emerging from investigations into the Bharatmala Pariyojana compensation scam in Chhattisgarh have raised serious concerns over alleged manipulation of land records and inflated payouts during the acquisition process for the Raipur-Visakhapatnam economic corridor.
According to officials probing the case, a family from Abhanpur near Raipur reportedly received compensation amounting to nearly ₹9.83 crore, almost 17 times more than the initial valuation linked to the acquired land parcel. Investigators suspect that land records were illegally altered and subdivided to increase compensation eligibility under the highway project.
The Bharatmala Pariyojana is one of the Centre’s flagship infrastructure initiatives aimed at expanding economic corridors and improving freight connectivity across India. However, land acquisition for the Raipur stretch has remained controversial for several years amid allegations of forged documents, irregular valuation practices and collusion between middlemen and government officials.
The Chhattisgarh Anti-Corruption Bureau and Economic Offences Wing had earlier registered cases against multiple officials and private individuals linked to the alleged fraud. Authorities claimed that manipulation of official land records, backdated entries and fraudulent subdivision of plots enabled several beneficiaries to obtain inflated compensation amounts far exceeding their actual entitlement.

The Enforcement Directorate has also intensified its probe into the alleged scam and recently carried out raids across Raipur and Mahasamund districts to trace the money trail and identify beneficiaries. Officials suspect that the overall financial irregularities linked to the project may run into several crores of rupees.
Meanwhile, several farmers affected by the Bharatmala project have continued protesting over compensation disparities, alleging that genuine landowners received significantly lower payments while select beneficiaries secured unusually large amounts through manipulation of the acquisition process.
The case has now triggered a wider political and administrative debate in Chhattisgarh over transparency in land acquisition procedures and oversight mechanisms in large-scale infrastructure projects.
