April 17, 2026 | Pune: In a sharp political statement during his recent Pune visit, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader Amit Thackeray strongly criticised the current law and order situation, remarking that the “city is collapsing” due to rising crime and governance failures.

Addressing the media, Thackeray expressed serious concern over increasing incidents of crime, including cases related to women’s safety and illegal activities. He stressed that such developments are alarming and require immediate, strict action from authorities to restore public confidence.

He also raised questions about the growing drug menace in Pune and across Maharashtra, asking whether the government has the capacity to control its spread. Calling the situation “serious and dangerous,” he urged stronger policing and accountability from the administration.

Taking a more aggressive stance, Thackeray demanded that police be given a “free hand” to deal with criminals, suggesting that only decisive and uncompromising action can bring the situation under control. He warned that if necessary, his party would also take to the streets to highlight the issue.

The MNS leader further pointed out that repeated incidents of crime indicate systemic failure rather than isolated cases. He questioned whether lessons have been learned from past high-profile incidents and emphasised the need for long-term governance reforms rather than reactive measures.

His remarks come at a time when Pune has witnessed several crime-related incidents and growing concerns over urban management, infrastructure stress, and public safety. Thackeray’s statements have added political momentum to the ongoing debate around governance and law enforcement in one of Maharashtra’s fastest-growing cities.
