Congress Names V. D. Satheesan as Kerala’s Next Chief Minister, Ending 10-Day Suspense

After nearly ten days of political uncertainty, Congress officially announced V. D. Satheesan as Kerala’s next Chief Minister, following the party’s landslide victory in the state assembly elections.

New Delhi, May 14, 2026 : Ten days after Kerala delivered a decisive mandate in favour of the Indian National Congress, the party finally put an end to the speculation surrounding its choice for Chief Minister. On Wednesday, Congress officially announced that V. D. Satheesan will lead the new government in Kerala, bringing the curtain down on days of intense political deliberation.

The announcement followed a high-level meeting held in New Delhi, attended by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, former party chief Rahul Gandhi, and several other senior leaders of the party. The gathering, described as a top-level conclave, was convened specifically to arrive at a consensus on the Chief Ministerial candidate following the election results declared on May 4.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh confirmed that the party had reached a unanimous decision. He addressed a press conference where he formally declared that the announcement of the Chief Minister’s name would be made on May 14 and true to that word, Satheesan’s name was put forward as the party’s choice.

V. D. Satheesan, a seasoned politician and a prominent face of the Congress in Kerala, is widely regarded as a sharp and articulate leader. He has long been associated with the party’s Kerala unit and is expected to bring stability and direction to the new government.

The Kerala assembly election results, declared on May 4, saw Congress-led United Democratic Front secure a comfortable majority, marking a significant political turnaround in the state. The victory was seen as a strong public endorsement of the party’s agenda and leadership.
