Digital Shift as Census 2027 Phase One Commences; Pune’s Leadership Leads Self-Enumeration Drive

Census 2027
India initiates the first phase of Census 2027, focusing on digital self-enumeration and house listing, with Pune’s top political and administrative leaders participating early to encourage widespread civic engagement.

May 2, 2026 | Pune: The landscape of Indian demographics underwent a significant transformation yesterday as the first phase of the Census 2027 officially commenced. This inaugural stage, which integrates house listing with a comprehensive housing census, marks a pivotal shift toward a “digital-first” approach. For the first time on this scale, the government has prioritized a self-enumeration portal, allowing citizens to record their data securely from their own homes, a move aimed at increasing accuracy and reducing the logistical burden on field enumerators.
In Pune, the campaign saw an immediate surge in momentum as high-ranking public representatives and officials took to the digital platform to lead by example. Murlidhar Mohol, alongside prominent ministers and leaders including Madhuri Misal, Siddharth Shirole, Hemant Rasane, Yogesh Tilekar, Manjusha Nagpure, and Shrinath Bhimale, successfully completed their self-enumeration process. Their collective participation serves as a strategic call to action for the city’s residents, emphasizing that civic duty is now as simple as a few clicks.
Reinforcing the administrative backbone of the drive, Additional Municipal Commissioners Omprakash Divte and Pavneet Kaur also registered their details through the official portal. PMC officials have noted that this digital window will remain open until May 15, 2026, providing a generous period for residents to ensure their households are accounted for. The data collected during this phase is critical; it forms the foundational blueprint for future urban planning, infrastructure development, and the equitable distribution of resources across the municipal corporation and the state at large.

As the drive continues, the local administration has deployed awareness campaigns across the city to assist those unfamiliar with the digital portal. Leaders have urged Punekars to not wait until the final weeks, stressing that active participation in the self-enumeration phase is essential for a precise and modern reflection of India’s growing population.
