Maharashtra’s registration department is digitising records from 1865–2001 using AI, enabling easy online access, protecting fragile documents, and simplifying property verification for citizens across the state.

Pune | 04 May 2026: In a significant push towards modern governance and heritage preservation, Maharashtra’s Registration and Stamps Department has accelerated its ambitious digitisation project aimed at safeguarding historical records using advanced technology, including artificial intelligence.

The initiative will cover a vast archive of documents dating back to 1865 up to 2001, including property deeds, marriage records, and archival materials stored in formats such as photographs, films, microfilms, and CDs. Many of these records, currently housed in sub-registrar offices across the state, are in fragile condition, often affected by dust, decay, and age.

Officials stated that the project will not only involve scanning these documents but also focus on their restoration and preservation. Once digitised, the records will be securely stored on cloud platforms, ensuring long-term safety and accessibility even in the event of disasters such as fires or floods.

A major benefit of this initiative will be the introduction of an e-search system, allowing citizens to access documents from as early as 1865 from their homes. This is expected to significantly ease the process of verifying property ownership, especially during buying and selling transactions where historical title records are crucial.

The move is also likely to reduce dependency on physical visits to government offices, saving both time and costs for citizens. Additionally, digitisation will eliminate risks associated with physical damage, loss, or misplacement of documents.

As part of the project, records maintained at the Government Photo Registration Office in Pune, spanning from 1927 to 2001, will also undergo digitisation. To execute the project efficiently, the department has recently appointed a private agency equipped with the required technical expertise.Officials believe this transformation will bridge the gap between legacy documentation systems and modern digital infrastructure, making governance more transparent, efficient, and citizen-friendly.
