Pune | July 8: In a significant development, the Kamshet Police have arrested five of the six accused, including three Highway Traffic Police personnel, in connection with an alleged ₹5 lakh extortion attempt involving tourists travelling from Pune to Lonavala on the Pune–Mumbai Expressway.

According to police, the incident occurred on July 5 at around 4:30 pm, when complainant Bhushit Umesh Sharma and three of his friends were travelling towards Lonavala in a Tata Punch car. Near Village Taje in Maval Taluka, their vehicle was allegedly intercepted by a Xylo fitted with an amber beacon.

Police said six persons wearing Highway Traffic Police uniforms allegedly accused the group of possessing narcotics, threatened them with legal action, and demanded ₹5 lakh in exchange for not initiating action against them.

Investigators stated that the accused allegedly forced the complainant and his companions to travel towards Talegaon to withdraw cash using ATM cards. However, when the complainant and his friends attempted to contact the police, the accused allegedly realized the situation and fled from the spot.

Based on the complaint, Kamshet Police Station registered Crime No. 152/2026 under Sections 127(2), 308(2), 352, 351(2), 351(3), and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.

Six Accused Identified

During the investigation, Kamshet Police identified all six accused as personnel attached to the Highway Police Assistance Centre, Khandala.

  • Police Constable Amol Nannaware (Buckle No. 2901)
  • Police Constable Tushar Dhaware (Buckle No. 3014)

  • Kisan Bomble
  • Nitesh Chavan
  • Tushar Ghadge

Police confirmed that five of the six accused have been arrested, while efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining accused.

Officials have also initiated departmental disciplinary proceedings against the police personnel involved.

The investigation is continuing to establish the role of each accused and examine all aspects of the case.
