IMD issues yellow heatwave alert for April 14 across Maharashtra; rising temperatures, dry weather, and heat health risks prompt safety advisories.
Pune – April 14, 2026: Maharashtra Braces for Scorching Heat and Yellow Alert on April 14
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for April 14, 2026, warning that heatwave conditions will intensify across several regions of Maharashtra, with rising temperatures and dry weather expected to dominate the state. The alert, signalling potentially dangerous heat, affects key districts including Thane and Raigad, while other areas are forecast to experience severe heat due to clear skies, hot winds, and an overall heat build-up that reflects an early onset of summer across central and eastern India.

Meteorologists attribute the sudden increase in temperatures to a persistent dry weather pattern and lack of rainfall, which has led to strong solar heating during daytime. Across Maharashtra, many regions are witnessing a steady rise in mercury levels, with clear skies allowing maximum temperatures to climb. Central and parts of Vidarbha — typically the hottest regions in the state – have already crossed the 40°C mark in recent days, a notable early-season spike.
According to IMD forecasts, temperatures in many interior districts could rise by 2–3°C over the next few days, reinforcing heatwave conditions. Meteorologists also highlight an anti-cyclonic circulation over the region, contributing to the intensification of heat as it suppresses cloud formation and rainfall, while enabling prolonged sunshine and hot dry air.
Under the IMD’s yellow alert:
- Vidarbha is expected to experience some of the state’s highest heat, with maximum temperatures possibly soaring between 40°C and 43°C. The combination of high daytime mercury and hot winds could make outdoor conditions particularly oppressive.
- Marathwada is forecast to remain intensely hot with temperatures climbing between 39°C and 42°C, intensifying public health risks in rural and urban areas alike.
- Thane and Raigad, situated in the coastal Konkan region, are officially under the yellow alert as the IMD cautions that heatwave conditions will prevail, exacerbated by humid but hot conditions due to the coastal climate.
Notably, Pune – though still hot -has not been placed under an official heatwave warning, with forecasts predicting dry weather but no significant spike in temperatures over the next 48 hours.
The IMD and local authorities have underscored the potential health risks associated with prolonged exposure to high temperatures, including heatstroke, dehydration, and heat exhaustion. Vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, outdoor workers, and those with pre-existing health conditions are especially at risk as heatwave conditions strengthen across the state.
Experts urge citizens to:
- Stay hydrated by drinking ample water and fluids throughout the day.
- Avoid outdoor exposure during peak sunshine hours, typically from 11 AM to 4 PM.
- Wear light, breathable clothing to reduce heat stress.
- Seek shade or air-conditioned environments wherever possible when temperatures are highest.
In addition, health professionals warn that heatwaves not only cause discomfort but can also burden hospitals with heat-related illnesses that are often preventable with proper precautions.
This early season heat growth comes amid broader climatic trends affecting large parts of India, where heatwaves have been emerging earlier in April and extending longer into the summer months. The IMD’s warning for Maharashtra reflects a larger pattern of rising temperatures that may influence daily life, water usage, energy demand, and public health preparedness as summer progresses.
The early warning could also have implications for agriculture and livestock, with farmers advised to monitor water needs for crops and animals, especially in drought-prone regions of Marathwada and Vidarbha.
