Pune’s Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Metro may begin by May 31, pending a crucial May 15 review meeting, promising relief from traffic congestion and boosting public transport across key IT and residential corridors.

Pimpri | 04 May 2026: The much-awaited Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar Metro Line 3 project in the Pune Metropolitan Region is nearing a decisive phase, with indications that services could begin as early as May 31, subject to final approvals.

A high-level meeting between the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority and the Tata Group has been scheduled for May 15, where officials will conduct a comprehensive review of the project. The meeting is expected to assess construction progress, safety standards, and technical readiness before taking a final call on the launch date.

Sources suggest that authorities are inclined to avoid further delays and aim to operationalise the metro within May itself, rather than pushing it into June. If all systems are cleared and infrastructure is fully prepared, May 31 is being considered a likely date for the commencement of services.

The first operational stretch, connecting Maan-Hinjewadi to Balewadi, is expected to open for passengers in the initial phase. This corridor passes through some of Pune’s busiest zones, including Hinjewadi, Wakad, and Balewadi, which currently face severe traffic congestion during peak hours.

Once operational, the metro line is expected to significantly ease road traffic by strengthening public transport options and reducing dependence on private vehicles. Officials believe this will bring much-needed relief to daily commuters, especially those working in the IT hub of Hinjewadi.

The project is also seen as a crucial step in supporting Pune’s rapid urbanisation. Authorities anticipate that the successful launch of the first phase will accelerate work on the remaining sections of the corridor. With the full Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar route expected to transform urban mobility in Pune, the upcoming review meeting is being viewed as a turning point in determining the timeline of one of the city’s most ambitious infrastructure projects.
