India is closely monitoring the safety of around 9,000 citizens in Iran while assessing energy and maritime security risks, as External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar holds talks with Iranian officials
New Delhi | March 13, 2026: The Government of India is closely monitoring the safety of Indian citizens residing in Iran as well as the country’s energy and maritime security interests amid the escalating tensions in West Asia, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Thursday.
Addressing a press briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the government is continuously assessing the evolving situation in the region and taking necessary steps to safeguard Indian nationals and strategic interests.

According to the ministry, nearly 9,000 Indian citizens are currently living in Iran. The group includes students, maritime personnel, professionals and religious pilgrims. As a precautionary measure, some Indians residing in sensitive locations, including the capital Tehran, have been relocated to safer areas.
India’s External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar has also been actively engaged in diplomatic consultations with Iranian officials. Over the past few days, Jaishankar held three rounds of telephonic discussions with Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi.During these conversations, the leaders discussed key issues including maritime security in the region and concerns related to India’s energy supply. Officials indicated that both sides exchanged views on the evolving situation, though detailed outcomes of the discussions have not yet been disclosed.

The government has also made arrangements for Indian citizens who wish to return home. Some nationals have already begun traveling back to India through neighbouring countries such as Azerbaijan and Armenia.Officials said the government remains alert and prepared to take further steps if the situation in the region escalates.
