IPS officer Somay Munde, DCP Zone 7 Pune and Shaurya Chakra awardee, has been appointed Joint Deputy Director in the Intelligence Bureau following a distinguished tenure marked by major operations against arms networks, organized crime, and narcotics trafficking.

Pune: In a significant recognition of his operational achievements and leadership in policing, IPS officer Somay Munde, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 7), Pune City Police, has been appointed as Joint Deputy Director in the Intelligence Bureau (IB) on Central Deputation. He was formally relieved from Pune Police on Tuesday, paving the way for his new assignment at the Centre.

A 2016-batch Maharashtra cadre IPS officer and Shaurya Chakra awardee, Munde leaves behind a tenure marked by strong action against organized crime, interstate arms networks, narcotics trafficking, and habitual offenders.

Among the most notable operations under his leadership was the high-profile crackdown on the illegal arms manufacturing hub at Umarti village in Madhya Pradesh’s Barwani district. Acting on intelligence developed during investigations into firearm-related offences in Pune, teams from Pune Police launched a large-scale operation that exposed a long-standing interstate network involved in the production and supply of country-made weapons. The operation led to the destruction of numerous illegal weapon-manufacturing units, detention of more than 40 suspects, and arrests of key operatives linked to the arms supply chain extending into Maharashtra and other states.

Soon after taking charge of Zone 7, Munde also launched an extensive drive against criminal gangs and repeat offenders. In a symbolic assertion of police authority, several notorious hooligans and history-sheeters operating in the zone were publicly paraded and subjected to preventive action, sending a strong message against street crime and gang activity. The campaign was followed by sustained enforcement measures that resulted in the externment of over ten hardened criminals from Pune city and district limits.

His tenure also witnessed major breakthroughs in the fight against narcotics. Under his supervision, Pune Police unearthed an interstate mephedrone (MD) trafficking network with links to Rajasthan. The operation resulted in the arrest of six accused and the seizure of approximately 2 kilograms of MD, valued at over ₹4 crore in the illegal market. The investigation exposed a well-established supply chain feeding the synthetic drug market in Pune and nearby regions.

Colleagues describe Munde as a hands-on officer with a strong focus on intelligence-led policing and interstate coordination. Whether tackling illegal arms manufacturing networks in central India, cracking down on organized crime within Pune, or pursuing narcotics traffickers across state boundaries, his approach has been marked by meticulous planning and strong field presence.

His appointment to the Intelligence Bureau is widely seen as a recognition of his operational credentials and investigative capabilities. In his new role as Joint Deputy Director, Munde is expected to contribute to national security, intelligence gathering, and strategic operations at the central level.
