Continuous rainfall has pushed Khadakwasla Dam close to 80% capacity, prompting authorities to prepare for a possible water release and urging residents to stay away from the riverbed.

Continuous heavy rainfall in the catchment areas has significantly increased the water level at Pune’s Khadakwasla Dam, with storage now approaching 80 per cent of its total capacity. In view of the rising inflows, irrigation authorities are closely monitoring the reservoir and have indicated that controlled water discharge may be initiated if rainfall continues over the next few hours.
Officials said the recent spell of intense rain across the Western Ghats has resulted in a steady rise in water inflows into the Khadakwasla reservoir. With the storage level nearing the 80 per cent mark, preparations are underway to regulate the water level through a phased release, depending on the inflow situation and weather conditions.
As a precautionary measure, the administration has appealed to citizens to stay away from the riverbed and low-lying areas along the Mutha River. Residents have also been advised not to venture near bridges, riverbanks or submerged pathways, as water levels can rise rapidly once the release begins.
Authorities have further instructed local disaster management teams and civic agencies to remain on alert and coordinate with emergency response units if required. People living near the river have been urged to follow official advisories and avoid spreading or believing unverified information on social media regarding water discharge timings.
The irrigation department stated that any decision regarding the release of water will be taken based on real-time monitoring of rainfall, reservoir inflows and downstream conditions. Necessary public announcements will be issued well in advance to ensure public safety.
The Khadakwasla Dam is one of Pune’s key water reservoirs and plays a crucial role in supplying drinking water to the city while also regulating river flow during the monsoon. With rainfall activity expected to continue, officials have emphasised that public cooperation and adherence to safety advisories are essential to prevent accidents and ensure preparedness.
