West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday called on the Congress and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] to set aside their political differences and unite against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) under the banner of the INDIA alliance.

Speaking at the Trinamool Congress’ annual Shaheed Diwas rally in Kolkata, Banerjee said all opposition parties should work together at the national level to strengthen the fight against the BJP. Her appeal is being viewed as politically significant, particularly because the TMC, Congress, and the Left parties have long been fierce rivals in West Bengal despite being partners in the INDIA alliance at the national level.

Political observers believe the statement could influence the opposition’s strategy ahead of upcoming electoral contests, as efforts continue to build greater unity among anti-BJP parties across the country.

During her address, Banerjee also launched a sharp attack on the BJP leadership in West Bengal. Without directly naming senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, she claimed she could “expose” the state’s opposition leadership, signalling an escalation in the political confrontation between the ruling TMC and the BJP.

At the same time, Banerjee delivered a stern warning to party members who had defected or rebelled against the Trinamool Congress. She made it clear that leaders who had betrayed the party would not be welcomed back into the organisation under any circumstances.

Her remarks underline the TMC’s dual strategy of seeking broader opposition unity at the national level while maintaining a tough stance against internal dissent and political defections within the party.

The annual Shaheed Diwas rally has traditionally served as a major political platform for the Trinamool Congress, with Banerjee using the occasion to outline the party’s strategy and address key national and state political issues.
