Koregaon Park Road Digging Sparks Safety Concerns, Residents Question Civic Accountability

Road excavation on Koregaon Park Main Road in Pune raises safety concerns, with residents questioning PMC accountability and coordination.
Pune, 27 April, 2026: Fresh road excavation work on the busy Koregaon Park Main Road has triggered safety concerns among residents and commuters, once again highlighting issues around civic coordination and accountability in Pune’s infrastructure projects. The stretch, located in the upscale locality of Koregaon Park, has seen ongoing digging activity that has disrupted traffic flow and raised fears about pedestrian safety, especially during peak hours.

According to reports, trenches dug along the main road have made commuting difficult, with uneven surfaces, barricading gaps, and incomplete restoration work posing risks to motorists and pedestrians alike. Locals have pointed out that despite being one of Pune’s most prominent residential and commercial areas, basic safety measures such as proper signage, lighting, and secure barricading appear inadequate at several points.
The situation has also revived concerns over repeated digging of roads by multiple agencies without proper coordination. Civic observers note that such works are often linked to utility projects like cable laying, pipeline installations, or road widening, but lack of synchronized planning results in the same roads being excavated multiple times. In fact, past instances have seen the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) take action against contractors for failing to restore roads properly after excavation work, following widespread public complaints.
Koregaon Park and nearby areas like Kalyani Nagar and Mundhwa are already under significant infrastructure pressure due to rapid urban growth and increasing traffic congestion. Ongoing projects, including road widening and bridge construction, are aimed at easing traffic but have simultaneously led to temporary disruption and inconvenience for daily commuters.
Residents have questioned whether proper permissions were obtained for the current excavation and whether the work adheres to established civic guidelines. Many have demanded stricter monitoring, time-bound completion, and immediate restoration of roads to prevent accidents, especially with the monsoon season approaching.
Experts warn that open trenches and poorly managed excavation sites can become hazardous during rains, increasing the risk of waterlogging, road collapses, and traffic chaos. With Pune already grappling with infrastructure challenges, such recurring issues have intensified calls for better planning and accountability from civic authorities.
The Koregaon Park road excavation has once again brought Pune’s urban infrastructure challenges into focus. While development work is necessary, residents are demanding that it be carried out responsibly, with safety, coordination, and timely completion given top priority to avoid putting lives at risk.
