Pune Tanker Menace Continues: Fifth Fatal Accident in April Claims Life in Ravet

A fifth fatal water tanker accident in Pune this April kills a 36-year-old in Ravet, raising serious concerns over road safety and tanker regulation.

Pune, 27 April, 2026: The alarming rise in fatal accidents involving water tankers in Pune continued with yet another tragic incident in Ravet, marking the fifth such death reported in April alone. According to police, a 36-year-old IT professional lost his life after coming under a speeding water tanker following a collision with another two-wheeler near a residential area in Ravet.

The victim, identified as Ravindra Hanumant Lature, was returning home when the accident occurred around evening hours. Police officials stated that his motorcycle collided with another bike, causing him to lose balance and fall onto the road. In that moment, a water tanker approaching from the opposite direction ran over him, leading to his death on the spot.

Authorities have registered a case against the tanker driver under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Motor Vehicles Act. CCTV footage from the area has been recovered, though officials say it does not clearly establish the full sequence of events yet, and further investigation is underway.

This incident is not isolated but part of a disturbing pattern seen across Pune over the past month. Multiple fatalities linked to water tankers have been reported in areas such as Bibwewadi, Hadapsar, Mohammadwadi, and Wanowrie. In one recent case, a 47-year-old man died after his bike was hit by a tanker, while earlier incidents involved a young football player and a woman biker losing their lives in separate crashes.

The growing number of such accidents has triggered widespread concern among residents, particularly in rapidly developing areas where dependence on private water tankers has increased due to irregular municipal water supply. Locals have pointed out that the rising movement of heavy tankers on narrow and crowded roads is creating a serious safety hazard for commuters and pedestrians.

Experts and civic observers believe that the issue goes beyond isolated driver negligence and reflects larger systemic gaps, including inadequate regulation, lack of strict enforcement, and increasing reliance on tanker water supply. Many residents have demanded stricter traffic monitoring, designated tanker routes, speed restrictions, and better accountability for tanker operators.

The repeated fatalities have also intensified calls for long-term solutions such as improving municipal water infrastructure to reduce tanker dependency. Until then, citizens fear that such incidents may continue to pose a daily risk on city roads.

The Ravet accident has once again highlighted the urgent need for stricter regulation and enforcement around water tanker operations in Pune. With five lives already lost in a single month, the situation underscores a growing urban safety crisis that demands immediate attention from authorities before more lives are lost.
