April 8, 2026 | New Delhi : A major diplomatic rift has emerged following the announcement of a US-Iran ceasefire, with conflicting interpretations over whether the agreement extends to Lebanon. The disagreement highlights growing complexities in the Middle East conflict, despite attempts at de-escalation. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who played a key mediating role, stated that the ceasefire covers “all fronts,” explicitly including Lebanon. This position suggests that hostilities involving Israel and Hezbollah were expected to pause alongside the broader US-Iran truce.

However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has firmly rejected this interpretation, asserting that Lebanon is not part of the ceasefire arrangement. Israeli officials have reiterated that while they support the temporary halt in strikes against Iran, military operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon will continue. The contradiction has created uncertainty on the ground, particularly as Hezbollah reportedly paused attacks following the ceasefire announcement, even as Israeli forces maintained operations in parts of Lebanon. Analysts suggest this divergence reflects deeper strategic differences between stakeholders involved in the conflict.

The ceasefire itself, brokered with Pakistan’s involvement, is intended as a two-week pause to allow negotiations between Washington and Tehran, with talks expected to take place in Islamabad. The agreement also includes provisions such as reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil route. Despite the temporary relief, the ambiguity surrounding Lebanon underscores the fragile nature of the arrangement. Ongoing hostilities in the region, coupled with differing interpretations of the ceasefire terms, raise concerns about its durability and effectiveness.

With over a million people displaced and significant casualties reported in Lebanon, the lack of clarity over the ceasefire’s scope could further complicate humanitarian and diplomatic efforts in the coming days.
