A group of residents from Pune’s Lodha Belmondo township undertook a cleanliness drive despite heavy rainfall, clearing an illegal garbage dump while urging authorities to strengthen waste management and curb irresponsible dumping practices.

In a commendable display of civic responsibility, residents of Lodha Belmondo township in Pune joined hands to remove an illegal garbage dump outside their residential complex, despite continuous rainfall. The volunteer-led initiative aimed to restore cleanliness and raise awareness about proper waste disposal in the area.
According to residents, the stretch outside the township’s main entrance had increasingly become a dumping ground for household waste, plastic, food leftovers and other litter. The accumulation of garbage not only created unhygienic conditions but also affected the surroundings and posed potential health risks during the monsoon season.
Equipped with gloves, masks, garbage bags and cleaning tools, volunteers collected a significant quantity of waste from the roadside. Along with the clean-up operation, they interacted with passers-by and local residents, urging them to dispose of waste responsibly and maintain public spaces free from litter.
Participants said the initiative was intended to send a strong message that maintaining cleanliness is a shared civic duty and cannot be left solely to municipal authorities. They expressed hope that similar community-driven efforts would encourage more neighbourhoods across Pune to take proactive steps towards environmental conservation and public hygiene.
The residents also appealed to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and concerned authorities to install adequate waste disposal facilities, increase surveillance in the area and initiate strict action against those found dumping garbage illegally. They stressed that sustained enforcement and improved infrastructure are essential to prevent such locations from turning into recurring dumping sites.
The cleanliness drive highlighted the growing role of citizen participation in addressing civic challenges and demonstrated how collective action can contribute to building a cleaner, healthier and more environmentally conscious city.
