The India Meteorological Department has forecast widespread heavy rainfall across Maharashtra over the next 48 hours, issuing a red alert for Pune’s ghat regions, orange alerts in five districts and yellow alerts across 19 others.
July 23, 2026 | PuneThe India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued multiple weather warnings for Maharashtra, forecasting intense rainfall activity over the next 48 hours as the southwest monsoon remains active across the state. Authorities have urged citizens to remain alert, particularly in regions vulnerable to flooding, landslides and waterlogging.
According to the latest forecast, a Red Alert has been issued for the ghat areas of Pune district, where extremely heavy rainfall is expected. The warning indicates a high likelihood of adverse weather conditions, including overflowing streams, reduced visibility, landslides in hilly terrain and disruption to transport services. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, especially through mountain passes and landslide-prone routes.
The IMD has also placed five districts under an Orange Alert, indicating the possibility of very heavy rainfall at isolated locations, while 19 districts remain under a Yellow Alert, warning of heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds. Civic agencies and disaster management teams have been asked to stay prepared for any emergency response.
Continuous rainfall over the past few days has already increased water levels in rivers and reservoirs across several parts of the state. Officials have advised people living near riverbanks and low-lying areas to remain vigilant and follow instructions issued by local authorities. Motorists have also been urged to drive cautiously due to the risk of poor visibility, waterlogged roads and falling debris in hilly sections.
The weather department expects the active monsoon conditions to persist over the coming days, with intermittent heavy showers likely across Konkan, the Western Ghats and parts of Madhya Maharashtra. Citizens are advised to monitor official IMD updates and district administration advisories before planning travel or outdoor activities.
