Maharashtra government prohibits two mosquito incense brands citing public health concerns, after findings suggested harmful emissions could pose risks to users, especially in enclosed indoor environments.

Mumbai | April 8, 2026: The Maharashtra government has imposed a ban on the manufacture, sale, and distribution of two mosquito repellent incense stick brands-‘Comfort’ and ‘Sleep Well’-following concerns over potential health hazards associated with their use.

The decision was taken after authorities identified that the products may emit harmful substances when burned, posing risks particularly in poorly ventilated indoor spaces. Officials indicated that prolonged exposure to such emissions could lead to respiratory issues and other health complications, prompting precautionary regulatory action.

According to sources, the applies across the state and includes immediate withdrawal of these products from the market. Retailers have been directed to stop selling existing stock, while manufacturers and distributors have been instructed to halt further production and supply.

Health experts have long cautioned against the indiscriminate use of mosquito repellents that rely on smoke or chemical fumes. The combustion of such incense sticks can release particulate matter and toxic compounds, which may adversely affect vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions.

Officials noted that the action aligns with broader public health priorities, especially as mosquito-borne diseases remain a concern in several parts of the state. While repellents are widely used as a preventive measure, authorities emphasised the need for safer alternatives that do not compromise indoor air quality.

The move is also expected to trigger increased scrutiny of similar products available in the market. Regulatory agencies may conduct further assessments to ensure that other mosquito repellents comply with safety standards and do not pose hidden health risks.

Consumers have been advised to exercise caution while selecting mosquito control products and to ensure proper ventilation when using any form of repellent that produces smoke. Authorities also encouraged the adoption of non-toxic alternatives such as liquid vaporizers, electric repellents, or natural methods of mosquito control.

The ban underscores the state government’s focus on safeguarding public health through preventive measures and regulatory oversight. Officials reiterated that strict action would be taken against any violations of the आदेश, including continued sale or distribution of the prohibited products.

Further updates or clarifications regarding the scope of the ban and potential penalties for non-compliance are expected to be issued by the concerned departments in the coming days.
