Maharashtra stops accepting Aadhaar as valid proof of date of birth, mandates birth certificate for all official work

Maharashtra
Maharashtra has stopped accepting Aadhaar as valid proof of date of birth due to rising errors and misuse. Birth certificates, hospital records, and transfer certificates will now be the only accepted documents.
Mumbai| November 29,2025: After Uttar Pradesh, the Maharashtra government has also decided to stop accepting Aadhaar as valid proof of date of birth. The School Education Department has issued clear instructions stating that Aadhaar will no longer be considered for school admissions, caste certificates, scholarships, or any government-related documentation.

Officials stated that complaints of frequent corrections and discrepancies in Aadhaar birth data had sharply increased, raising concerns about misuse and falsification. To ensure accuracy and prevent fraudulent entries, the state has removed Aadhaar from the list of acceptable age-verification documents.

According to the new rule, only a birth certificate, hospital birth record, or transfer certificate will be treated as valid proof for students and applicants. This move will require thousands of parents and guardians across Maharashtra to obtain or update their child’s birth certificate.
The department said the decision aims to strengthen authenticity in documentation and avoid administrative errors linked to unreliable date-of-birth entries.
