Mumbai Airport Breaks Record With 1,036 Air Traffic Movements in Single Day
Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport handles 1,036 takeoffs and landings in 24 hrs — a new milestone for single-runway operation.
Mumbai | November 25, 2025: Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has achieved a historic milestone by recording 1,036 air traffic movements (ATMs) in a single day on 21 November 2025. This marks the highest number of flights handled in 24 hours at the airport, highlighting both rising travel demand and remarkable operational efficiency.
On this record-breaking day, the airport managed 755 domestic flights and 281 international flights, with 520 arrivals and 516 departures. Passenger traffic reached 1,70,488 travelers, including 1,21,527 domestic and 48,961 international passengers, almost matching the previous single-day record of 1,70,516.
Analysts attribute the surge to the festive travel season, which has increased demand on major domestic routes connecting Mumbai with cities such as Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Ahmedabad. International travel also showed strong performance, with high-traffic destinations including Dubai, London, Doha, Abu Dhabi, and Jeddah.
A particularly notable aspect of this achievement is that it occurred at a single-runway airport. Unlike many global hubs with multiple parallel runways, CSMIA’s main runway handled all these movements, demonstrating exceptional planning and coordination.
Operational upgrades have played a crucial role in this accomplishment. The airport has expanded its self-check-in kiosks, self-baggage drop units, and DigiYatra facilities, streamlining passenger processing. The Airport Operations Control Centre (AOCC) also manages real-time coordination across airlines, ground handling teams, and air traffic control, ensuring smooth aircraft turnaround and minimal delays.
This record has broader implications for India’s aviation sector. It underscores not only the resilience of air travel post-pandemic but also the potential for existing airports to handle increased traffic through smart operational strategies. The upcoming Navi Mumbai Airport is expected to further relieve congestion, but this milestone demonstrates that current infrastructure can be pushed efficiently.
Despite the achievement, challenges remain. High traffic volumes increase stress on air traffic control, ground handling, and safety systems. Maintaining punctuality and operational safety while handling such a dense schedule will require continued monitoring and investment.
