Mumbai cements its dominance in India’s digital infrastructure, commanding nearly 50 percent of the country’s total data center capacity, driven by subsea cable landings, reliable power grids, and a booming financial sector

May 30, 2026 | Mumbai: Mumbai continues to assert its absolute dominance in India’s tech infrastructure landscape, accounting for approximately 50 percent of the nation’s total operational data center capacity. According to a comprehensive industry report by Avendus Capital, the financial capital’s supremacy is fueled by its robust submarine cable landing stations, highly reliable power supply, sturdy road networks, and a well-established fiber-optic framework.

Out of India’s current total installed capacity of 1,650 megawatts (MW), nearly 98 percent is concentrated within seven major metropolitan hubs. Mumbai comfortably leads the pack with an operational capacity of 801 MW. Reflecting its aggressive trajectory, the city has another 448 MW of capacity currently under construction, alongside an additional 893 MW proposed for future expansion. The city’s strategic immunity to major natural disasters, paired with massive data demands from the banking, financial services, and insurance (BFSI) sectors, positions it to capture 47 percent of all incremental capacity nationwide over the next five years.

Chennai holds its ground as the second most preferred destination, driven by geographical advantages and coastal connectivity, currently operating at 268 MW with 153 MW under development. Meanwhile, Maharashtra’s premier IT hub, Pune, is registering explosive growth, boasting an installed capacity of 111 MW with a staggering vacancy rate of just two percent, highlighting an immediate demand for localized server infrastructure.

Other key metropolitan hubs contributing to India’s cloud and storage matrix include New Delhi at 161 MW, Hyderabad at 138 MW, and Bengaluru at 119 MW, while Kolkata tracks at 17 MW. As global tech investments pour into India, the localized concentration in coastal and financial powerhouses reinforces the state of Maharashtra as the primary engine driving India’s multi-billion-dollar cloud revolution.
