Elon Musk Clarifies SpaceX-Anthropic AI Deal, Says Colossus Lease Limited To Six Months

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has clarified that the company’s agreement to provide artificial intelligence computing capacity to Anthropic is only a short-term arrangement, countering earlier reports that suggested a long-term multi-billion-dollar commitment.

The clarification came after SpaceX’s filings and industry reports indicated that Anthropic, the maker of Claude AI, could potentially pay billions of dollars over several years to access computing infrastructure at the company’s Colossus AI data centre. However, Musk stated that the current agreement is limited to a 180-day lease and includes a provision allowing either side to terminate the arrangement with a 90-day notice period.

According to Musk, the short duration was requested by SpaceX rather than Anthropic, as the company wants to retain flexibility over the future use of its rapidly expanding AI computing resources. He also indicated that while the agreement could eventually continue for a longer period, SpaceX has not committed to leasing Colossus capacity for several years.

Anthropic recently entered into a partnership with SpaceX to gain access to additional computing power amid growing demand for its Claude family of AI models and enterprise-focused artificial intelligence products. The agreement allows Anthropic to tap into SpaceX’s Colossus infrastructure in Memphis, Tennessee, one of the world’s largest AI supercomputing facilities.

Industry observers had viewed the deal as a major revenue opportunity for SpaceX’s growing AI infrastructure business. Earlier disclosures suggested the arrangement could generate substantial long-term income if extended through future phases of deployment. Musk’s latest remarks, however, indicate that the agreement remains far more flexible than previously believed.

The development comes amid intensifying competition in the artificial intelligence sector, where companies are racing to secure access to advanced chips, large-scale data centres and computing power needed to train next-generation AI models. Demand for AI infrastructure has surged globally as firms such as Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and others continue expanding their AI capabilities.
