Plastic Currency Notes of Rs 10 and Rs 20 to Be Introduced Soon in India

The Reserve Bank of India will soon begin field trials of polymer currency notes, with the government approving a proposal to test one billion plastic notes each of Rs 10 and Rs 20 denominations.

New Delhi: India is set to begin field trials of plastic, or polymer, currency notes on an experimental basis. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had sent a proposal to the central government seeking approval to test one billion polymer notes each in the Rs 10 and Rs 20 denominations, and the government has now cleared the proposal.

Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary shared this information in the Lok Sabha on Monday, in a written reply to a question. He clarified that the RBI had forwarded the proposal under Section 25 of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934, based on a recommendation from its Central Board of Directors.

The government also clarified that the introduction of plastic notes does not mean paper currency will be phased out entirely. According to the RBI, polymer notes will remain in circulation alongside the existing paper notes. There is currently no proposal under consideration to completely replace paper currency with polymer notes.

The government further noted that cash transactions and digital payments are complementary to each other and will both continue to remain available options for the general public. The field trial is expected to help authorities assess the durability, cost-effectiveness and security features of polymer notes compared to the existing paper currency before any decision on wider rollout is taken.

Polymer notes are known globally for their longer lifespan, resistance to moisture and dirt, and enhanced security features compared to paper currency, and several countries including Australia and the UK have already adopted them widely.
