April 13 | Pune : In a significant cultural development, Maharashtra’s Warkari community is set to witness its first-ever dedicated three-day convention, as announced by state minister Uday Samant. The initiative aims to promote social awareness and strengthen the values deeply rooted in the centuries-old Warkari tradition. The announcement was made during a cultural award ceremony organised by a literary and arts foundation in Pune. The event also honoured individuals who have made notable contributions to devotional and folk traditions. Kirtan practitioner Keshav Maharaj Namdas, believed to be a descendant of Sant Namdev, was recognised for his service, while folk artist Chandatai Tiwadi from Pandharpur was awarded for her contribution to traditional art forms.

The programme was attended by several dignitaries, including minister Chandrakant Patil, scholars, and cultural leaders, who highlighted the importance of preserving Warkari values such as humility, discipline, and devotion. Speakers noted that the tradition continues to attract educated individuals and even international followers, reflecting its enduring relevance. They also emphasised the role of kirtan and bharud as powerful mediums of social awareness. Through these art forms, important social messages, ethical values, and a positive outlook on life are communicated effectively to the masses without any element of personal gain.

Scholars at the event recalled the contributions of saints like Dnyaneshwar, Namdev, and Eknath, who laid the foundation of the Warkari movement and expanded its reach across Maharashtra. Their teachings continue to inspire generations and guide the community’s service-oriented approach. The upcoming convention is expected to serve as a platform to celebrate this legacy, encourage dialogue, and ensure that the spiritual and cultural essence of the Warkari tradition is preserved for future generations.
