Pokhran Nuclear Tests Reflected India’s Scientific Excellence, Says PM Modi on National Technology Day

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the 1998 Pokhran nuclear tests showcased India’s scientific strength and technological capability while reaffirming the nation’s commitment towards self-reliance and innovation.

New Delhi | May 11, 2026:Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said the successful Pokhran-II nuclear tests conducted in 1998 reflected India’s scientific excellence and technological capability, as the nation observed National Technology Day. In his message marking the occasion, the Prime Minister highlighted the contribution of Indian scientists, researchers, and innovators in strengthening the country’s global standing in science and technology.

National Technology Day is celebrated every year on May 11 to commemorate India’s successful nuclear tests at Pokhran in Rajasthan in 1998 under Operation Shakti. The tests established India as a nuclear-capable nation and are widely regarded as a landmark moment in the country’s scientific and strategic history.

Recalling the achievements of Indian scientists during the Pokhran tests, PM Modi stated that the event demonstrated India’s determination to achieve technological self-reliance despite global challenges and restrictions. He noted that innovation and scientific advancement continue to play a crucial role in India’s development journey and economic growth.

The Prime Minister also emphasized the importance of encouraging young innovators, startups, and researchers to contribute towards building a technologically advanced and self-reliant India. He reiterated that emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence, space technology, semiconductors, defence manufacturing, and digital infrastructure are shaping the country’s future.

The Pokhran-II tests, conducted on May 11 and May 13, 1998, involved a series of underground nuclear explosions led by Indian scientists and defence experts. The operation was coordinated by key institutions including the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC). The achievement remains one of the most significant milestones in India’s technological and strategic history.

National Technology Day is observed across the country through exhibitions, discussions, scientific events, and innovation-focused programmes aimed at promoting scientific awareness and technological advancement among students and professionals.
