Pune
Pune: In a departure from conventional big-budget weddings, Pune recently witnessed a unique union that blended art with social responsibility. International Bharatnatyam exponent Vaishnavi Dhore and Marathi film actor-producer Chandrakant Raut

15 April 2026 : Officially tied the knot under the Special Marriage Act in a ceremony held on a performance stage, marking the culmination of their 13-year-long friendship. The ceremony, hosted at the Zapurza Art Studio in Kudje, stood out as a rare instance where the bride commenced her marital journey by performing a full Bharatnatyam recital. Art as a Wedding Vow The highlight of the evening was Vaishnavi’s performance, where she presented traditional ‘Alarippu’, ‘Varnam’, ‘Sakhi He’, ‘Jayadev’, and ‘Tillana’. Dressed in traditional dance attire and accompanied by the rhythmic sound of ghungroos, the performance served as a creative substitute for customary rituals, leaving the audience spellbound.

Vaishnavi’s path to the stage is one of significant perseverance. After losing her parents at a young age, she was raised by her grandparents. Her formal training began in 2015-16 under Dr. Swati Daithankar, later leading her to the renowned dancer Rama Vaidyanathan. Impressed by Vaishnavi’s dedication, Vaidyanathan took her under her wing. For the past decade, Vaishnavi has been based in Delhi, practicing and teaching Bharatnatyam across the country. The groom, Chandrakant Raut, is a recognized face in Marathi cinema, with roles in acclaimed films like ‘Rege’, ‘Mulshi Pattern’, and ‘Paris’. He served as the associate producer for the National Award-winning film ‘Khwada’ and is currently awaiting the release of his upcoming project, ‘Hyderabad Custody’. Beyond his cinematic career, Raut has established a strong identity in organic farming.
A Green Initiative Moving beyond personal celebration, the couple utilized the occasion to promote environmental conservation. In lieu of traditional return gifts, the 500 guests – comprising figures from the arts, politics, and social sectors – were presented with plant seeds. The couple encouraged attendees to plant these seeds in their gardens or farms to foster a greener environment.

The event saw the presence of several dignitaries, including Sangeet Natak Akademi Awardee Rama Vaidyanathan and ‘Khwada’ director Bhaurao Karhade. By prioritizing art and ecology over ritualistic grandeur, the wedding has set a progressive precedent for the modern generation
