Pune Man Undergoing Psychiatric Treatment Dies by Suicide at Yerawada Mental Hospital

A 29-year-old man undergoing treatment at Pune’s Yerawada Mental Hospital allegedly died by suicide on Tuesday evening, just two days after being admitted for severe depression and psychosis.

Pune | May 13: An unfortunate incident has been reported from the Yerawada Mental Hospital, where a 29-year-old patient allegedly died by suicide while undergoing psychiatric treatment. The deceased has been identified as Sunny Sonawane, who had reportedly been battling severe depression and hyper psychosis following emotional distress linked to a reaction from a beard-growth chemical.

According to hospital officials, Sonawane was admitted to the psychiatric facility in Yerawada two days before the incident after his mental condition reportedly worsened. Sources said he had been under observation and receiving treatment for psychological instability and anxiety-related symptoms.

The incident came to light during the evening hours when hospital staff arrived at the ward to distribute refreshments. Officials allegedly found the patient hanging from a window using a pyjama cloth tied around the grill. Medical staff immediately rushed to the spot and informed senior hospital authorities as well as the police.

Police officials later reached the hospital premises and initiated a preliminary inquiry into the incident. The body was subsequently shifted to Sassoon General Hospital for postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.

Authorities stated that further investigation is underway to examine the circumstances surrounding the alleged suicide, including hospital supervision protocols and the patient’s medical condition prior to the incident. Statements of hospital staff and family members are also expected to be recorded as part of the inquiry.

The incident has raised concerns regarding patient monitoring and mental health care management inside psychiatric institutions. Officials have assured that a detailed probe will be conducted to ascertain whether there was any negligence involved in the case.
