April 29, 2026 | Pune: In a significant crackdown, Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar has ordered the cancellation of 40 arms licences in a single day following a detailed verification process. The action is part of a broader initiative to reassess the necessity and compliance of weapon licence holders across the city. According to police officials, the licences were revoked primarily due to failure in renewal procedures and the inability of licence holders to justify the continued need for possessing firearms. The move comes amid an intensified scrutiny process aimed at ensuring that only eligible individuals retain permission to own weapons.
Since assuming office two years ago, Commissioner Amitesh Kumar has overseen the cancellation of a total of 289 arms licences. Additionally, authorities are currently reviewing hundreds of pending applications, with around 476 proposals for new licences under examination. The verification process involves a thorough background check of each licence holder, including the purpose for which the weapon was originally sanctioned and whether that need still exists. Officials emphasized that public safety remains the top priority, and licences are being revoked wherever possession of arms is deemed unnecessary or unjustified.
Speaking on the development, Commissioner Amitesh Kumar stated that every licence holder is undergoing strict scrutiny, and decisions are being taken only after careful evaluation. The ongoing drive is expected to continue in the coming weeks, with more licences likely to face cancellation if found non-compliant.
The move has been viewed as part of a larger effort by Pune Police to regulate arms possession and enhance urban security, ensuring that firearms do not remain in circulation without valid justification.
