The National Green Tribunal has continued its stay on tree cutting in Nashik, allowing permission only in emergencies, as concerns grow over large-scale felling linked to Kumbh Mela-related works
Nashik | 29 April 2026: The controversy over tree felling in Nashik has resurfaced after the National Green Tribunal extended its stay on cutting trees within the municipal limits, citing environmental concerns linked to ongoing development work.
The tribunal has made it clear that while the ban remains in place, the civic body can approach it for permission in case of genuine emergencies, such as trees posing a threat to human life. The next hearing in the matter is scheduled for June 19.

The issue has sparked strong reactions from environmental activists, who allege that large-scale tree cutting is being carried out under the pretext of preparations for the Kumbh Mela. Concerns have also been raised about the loss of old banyan trees, which are considered an important part of the city’s ecological and cultural landscape.
The tribunal had earlier observed that permissions for tree cutting were being issued late on Fridays, with actual felling taking place over weekends, limiting public scrutiny. Taking note of this, it had imposed a complete ban on tree cutting until April 28, which has now been extended.

During the recent hearing, the Nashik Municipal Corporation sought relaxation of the stay, arguing that emergency situations such as fallen or hazardous trees require immediate action. However, the tribunal maintained that such cases must be brought before it for approval rather than granting blanket permission.
The case, filed by petitioner Manish Bawiskar against the municipal corporation, has also seen intervention attempts by other applicants. However, the tribunal reportedly dismissed certain applications after objections were raised, stating that they appeared to support the civic body’s position.

In addition, the tribunal has directed Municipal Commissioner Manisha Khatri and Garden Department head Vivek Bhadane, along with other concerned officials, to submit their responses within two weeks regarding alleged violations of earlier orders. The matter continues to draw attention as it balances environmental protection with public safety and urban development needs.
