Pune Records Lowest May Rainfall in Three Years as Shivajinagar Registers Just 13.3 mm

A severe precipitation deficit hit Pune last month, with Shivajinagar recording its lowest May rainfall since 2023, even as meteorologists predict an imminent return of thunderous pre-monsoon showers.

PUNE, June 1, 2026 : Climatological shifts have caused Pune’s pre-monsoon precipitation to plummet to a three-year low, contrasting sharply with the exceptionally wet conditions observed during the same period in previous years. Data released by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reveals that the core monitoring station at Shivajinagar registered a meager 13.3 millimeters of total rainfall throughout May, highlighting a dry spell across the urban district.
The current weather pattern stands in stark opposition to last year’s historic trends when early monsoon currents advanced rapidly into the region. In May 2025, Shivajinagar accumulated an extraordinary 250.4 millimeters of rainfall. Historical IMD datasets show that single-digit rainfall remains a frequent phenomenon in the city’s decadal cycle.
The station went entirely dry with 0.0 millimeters in 2019, while recording mere fractions of a millimeter in 2022. Meteorologists emphasize that these steep annual fluctuations are standard for transitional months, assuring residents that intense thundershowers are slated to impact the state over the coming days.
Concurrently, diminished precipitation has triggered a significant escalation in nighttime discomfort. Shivajinagar recorded a mean minimum temperature of 24.1 degrees Celsius last month, marking the highest nighttime baseline documented in the city since 2014. This overthrew the previous decade-high nighttime baseline of 23.9 degrees Celsius monitored in May 2018.

Senior IMD scientist S. D. Sanap confirmed that despite the severe dry spell and oppressive nighttime heat, a atmospheric course correction is underway.
A fresh meteorological alert indicates that a volatile convective system will trigger widespread lightning, gusty winds, and stormy downpours across Pune and broader Maharashtra. Regional municipal corporations have been advised to brace for sudden localized waterlogging as these intense pre-monsoon convective systems displace the prolonged dry spell.
