Pune Airport’s long-pending expansion project has received a major boost after the Central government initiated discussions with defence authorities for the transfer of approximately 40 acres of land adjoining the airport premises. The proposed transfer is being viewed as a crucial step toward addressing the airport’s growing infrastructure needs amid rising passenger traffic and increasing demand for air connectivity.
The airport, which operates from a civil enclave within the Indian Air Force’s Lohegaon Air Base, has faced space constraints for years. These limitations have affected plans for expanding terminal facilities, enhancing passenger amenities, and increasing operational efficiency. With Pune emerging as a major hub for information technology, manufacturing, education, and business activities, the need for a larger and more modern airport has become increasingly urgent.
According to officials familiar with the development, discussions between the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Civil Aviation have gained momentum, with efforts focused on identifying and transferring the required land parcel. If the proposal receives the necessary approvals, it could pave the way for substantial infrastructure upgrades, including expanded terminal areas, improved passenger handling systems, and better support facilities.

The expansion is expected to help the airport accommodate future growth in domestic and international air travel while reducing congestion during peak travel periods. Industry stakeholders have repeatedly highlighted the need for enhanced aviation infrastructure in Pune, given the city’s rapid economic growth and increasing importance in western India.
While the land transfer process is still under consideration and subject to regulatory clearances, the latest development has generated optimism among residents, businesses, and aviation experts. The project is expected to strengthen Pune’s connectivity, support regional development, and contribute to the city’s long-term economic aspirations.
