Pune Records Three-Year Low May Rainfall as Overnight Temperatures Reach Decade-High Peak

Pune’s Shivajinagar locality registered a significant rainfall deficit this May, accumulating just 13.3 mm of precipitation to mark its lowest monthly rainfall total in the last three years
June 1, 2026 | Pune: The India Meteorological Department revealed that Shivajinagar recorded a meager 13.3 mm of rainfall throughout May, a sharp departure from the historic high of 250.4 mm observed during the same period last year. Weather scientists noted that while May 2025 saw an exceptionally early and aggressive surge in pre-monsoon activity across the city, the current year’s atmospheric conditions remained highly suppressed, driving down regional precipitation to a three-year low.
A decade-long analysis by meteorologists shows that erratic May rainfall is a recurring pattern for the region, with Shivajinagar recording single-digit precipitation totals five times over the past ten years. Historical data highlights 2019 as completely dry with 0.0 mm, followed by a minor 0.7 mm in 2022, 3.7 mm in 2018, 6.5 mm in 2016, and 7.5 mm in 2017. Conversely, more robust precipitation cycles were recorded in 2015 at 112.7 mm, 2021 at 88.8 mm, and 2024 at 95.2 mm, illustrating the intense volatility of pre-monsoon convective showers.

Compounding the dry spell, Shivajinagar experienced an unprecedented surge in its night temperatures, recording a mean minimum temperature of 24.1 degrees Celsius. This reading represents the highest minimum temperature recorded in the locality since 2014, surpassing the previous decade-high threshold of 23.9 degrees Celsius documented in May 2018. This elevated night-time thermal index significantly reduced the standard nocturnal cooling effect, intensifying overall heat distress for urban residents.
Despite the exceptionally dry conditions over the past few weeks, weather experts forecast immediate relief for the state. Convective developments indicate that a fresh spell of thunderstorms, accompanied by gusty winds and lightning, is highly likely to impact Pune and surrounding districts between June 2 and June 5. Officials have advised citizens to remain cautious during evening hours, as these impending transitional showers are expected to break the prolonged dry spell before the official arrival of the southwest monsoon.
