Purandar Airport Land Acquisition Accelerates; 76% Land Taken Over, October 10 Deadline for Remaining Owners
Purandar Airport land acquisition reaches 76% completion as Pune administration takes possession of 980 hectares. Remaining landowners have until October 10.
Pune: The land acquisition process for the proposed Chhatrapati Sambhajiraje International Airport at Purandar has entered a crucial phase, with the Pune district administration taking possession of 980 hectares, or 76% of the 1,216 hectares required for the project.
The airport land is spread across seven villages in Purandar taluka — Vanpuri, Kumbharvalan, Ekhatpur, Khanwadi, Pargaon, Udachiwadi and Munjwadi.
96% of Farmers Have Given Consent
According to the district administration, around 96% of affected farmers have agreed to provide their land for the airport project. Consent has been received for approximately 1,167 hectares, while some landowners continue to oppose the acquisition of nearly 40 hectares.
The administration has given the remaining landowners a final deadline of October 10, 2026, to provide their consent. Officials have indicated that land belonging to those who do not agree by the deadline will subsequently be acquired through the compulsory acquisition process.
₹1.61 Crore Compensation Per Acre
The state government has fixed compensation for the acquired land at ₹1.61 crore per acre. Separate compensation packages are also applicable for affected trees, orchards, wells and houses.
The district administration has so far distributed approximately ₹3,800 crore in compensation to landowners.
High Court Decision Clears Legal Hurdle
The latest progress follows a Bombay High Court decision dismissing a petition filed by farmers challenging the proposed airport site and the land acquisition process.
The court observed that selecting a site for a major airport is a technical and policy decision involving expert assessment. It declined to interfere with the government’s site selection while clarifying that affected landowners can approach the appropriate authorities regarding acquisition and compensation-related disputes.
Construction Timeline
The Maharashtra government has maintained that construction work on the Purandar airport is expected to begin in December 2026, with the Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) handling the project and tendering process.
For now, completing the remaining land acquisition is the key milestone. With 76% of the required land already in the administration’s possession and the October 10 deadline approaching, the next few days are expected to be significant for the long-delayed airport project.
