Manjusha Nagpure has announced mandatory police verification and QR-based ID cards to ensure transparency, safety, and better urban management.

April 13 | Pune In an effort to streamline street vending and address long-standing civic concerns, Pune authorities have introduced a new system mandating police verification and QR code-based identity cards for all street vendors. The initiative, announced by Manjusha Nagpure, aims to bring greater accountability and organisation to the city’s informal vending sector.

Under the new guidelines, every street vendor will be required to undergo police verification to ensure proper background checks and confirm their eligibility to operate. Following verification, vendors will be issued digital identity cards embedded with QR codes. These cards will include essential details such as the vendor’s name, type of business, and designated vending location. The move is designed to tackle persistent issues such as illegal hawking, lack of regulation, and congestion in public spaces. By introducing a structured identification system, authorities hope to create a more organised and transparent framework for street vending across Pune.

Officials have also highlighted the benefits for genuine vendors. With official recognition, authorised vendors are expected to receive protection from eviction and harassment, while also gaining a clearer legal standing. The initiative aims to strike a balance between protecting livelihoods and maintaining civic order. Vendor associations have welcomed the decision and assured cooperation with authorities. They have committed to maintaining cleanliness, avoiding obstruction of traffic, and adhering to designated vending zones.

Experts believe that the introduction of QR-based identification and mandatory verification could significantly reduce illegal vending activities and improve overall urban management. The system is also expected to enhance public convenience by reducing congestion and promoting a cleaner, more organised city environment. As Pune continues to grow, such measures are seen as crucial in balancing economic opportunities for small vendors with the need for efficient and well-regulated public spaces.
