Rohit Pawar Warns MPSC Protest Could Shift to Alka Chowk if Pune Police Fail to Cooperate
Rohit Pawar warns that the MPSC protest in Pune could move to Alka Chowk if police fail to cooperate, amid a dispute over permission at S M Joshi Bridge.
Pune: Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) MLA Rohit Pawar has warned that the ongoing protest by Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) aspirants could be shifted to Alka Chowk on Tilak Road if Pune Police fail to cooperate with the demonstrators.
The warning came amid growing tensions at the protest site near S M Joshi Bridge, where aspirants have been demanding the resignation of MPSC Chairman Vivek Bhimanwar over alleged irregularities in the commission’s functioning. The agitation began on October 1 and entered its ninth day on Friday, October 9.
Police Ask Protesters to Vacate S M Joshi Bridge
Pune Police have directed the protesters to vacate the S M Joshi Bridge area, citing the absence of valid permission, traffic congestion and inconvenience to local residents.
Police have suggested that the protesters seek permission to hold their agitation at an alternative location near the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar statue close to the District Collector’s Office.
However, Rohit Pawar and the protesting students have opposed leaving the existing site, maintaining that their demands need to be addressed.
Rohit Pawar Issues Warning to Police
Pawar warned that the protest could move to Alka Chowk if the police did not cooperate with the demonstrators. He also disputed the police’s concerns about traffic congestion, alleging that vehicles were being diverted towards the protest site to make it appear that the agitation was disrupting traffic.
He said the protesters had been demonstrating peacefully and urged the police not to create further difficulties for them.
MPSC Chairman’s Resignation Remains Key Demand
The protesters are primarily seeking the resignation of MPSC Chairman Vivek Bhimanwar, along with accountability over alleged irregularities in the commission’s functioning and recruitment examinations.
The agitation has drawn support from opposition leaders, while police have maintained that demonstrations must comply with permission requirements and public-order regulations.
Protest Continues Amid Disagreement Over Venue
The dispute over the protest location comes amid judicial proceedings concerning demonstrations by MPSC aspirants in Pune. The Bombay High Court has acknowledged students’ right to raise grievances while urging them to pursue their demands lawfully and avoid causing public inconvenience.
The next steps will depend on discussions between the protesters, police and government representatives, as the students continue pressing for action on their demands.
