Sharad Pawar declares that the Nationalist Congress Party will allocate half of its tickets in the upcoming elections to young candidates with no prior political experience, aiming to bring fresh talent and strengthen the party’s connection with voters.

Pune | October 13, 2025 — Sharad Pawar, the president of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), has announced that for the upcoming elections, the party will allocate 50 percent of tickets to young candidates with no prior political background. This move is aimed at bringing fresh talent into the party and strengthening its connection with younger voters.

Pawar highlighted the importance of including capable individuals from outside traditional political families. He believes this approach will help the NCP remain relevant and responsive to public expectations, especially in areas where the party’s influence has waned in recent years.

The announcement comes after the party’s poor performance in the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections, where it contested 86 seats but won only 10, marking its lowest tally in state history. The BJP-led alliance achieved a decisive majority, leaving the opposition with limited representation in the assembly.

Despite these setbacks, the NCP retained key constituencies, including Vadgaon Sheri in Pune and Mohol in Solapur. By opening opportunities for youth candidates without political backgrounds, the party aims to rebuild its base and inject new energy into its organizational structure.

Sharad Pawar, who has hinted at retiring from active politics after his Rajya Sabha term ends in 2026, stressed that empowering young candidates will bring fresh perspectives and innovative solutions to contemporary political challenges. This initiative is part of the NCP’s broader strategy to reconnect with voters, regain public trust, and prepare a more dynamic and competitive team for future elections.

The move is expected to generate excitement among young voters and could set a precedent for other parties to engage with first-time political aspirants. By combining experience with new talent, the NCP hopes to strengthen its position in Maharashtra’s political landscape and enhance its electoral prospects in the coming years.
