Maharashtra Health Minister Prakash Abitkar announced a statewide inspection drive against bogus doctors within a month, warning of strict legal action while also proposing higher incentives for doctors in rural areas

Mumbai | March 13, 2026: Maharashtra Public Health Minister Prakash Abitkar has announced that a statewide campaign against bogus doctors will begin within the next month, with authorities set to conduct inspections across districts to identify and take action against fraudulent medical practitioners.

The minister made the statement while responding to a Calling Attention Motion raised by Arun Lad in the state legislature.

Abitkar said legal provisions are already in place to deal with individuals practicing medicine without proper qualifications or registration. He warned that strict legal action would be taken against anyone found guilty of operating as a bogus doctor.

To monitor and curb such practices, committees have been formed at multiple administrative levels. In municipal corporation areas, the committees are chaired by the respective municipal commissioners, while at the district level they operate under the leadership of the district collectors. At the taluka level, the committees function under block development officers and are responsible for taking immediate action whenever complaints are received.

The minister added that the issue of unqualified practitioners is being continuously reviewed through these committees to ensure effective enforcement.Meanwhile, the state government is also taking steps to improve the availability of qualified doctors in rural and tribal regions. Abitkar said a proposal has been submitted to the Finance Department seeking an increase in incentive allowances for doctors serving in these areas.

He emphasized that, as per existing regulations, medical practitioners must obtain proper registration after completing their degree before they can legally practice medicine. The Health Department, in coordination with local self-government bodies, is ensuring strict compliance with these requirements.

Officials said regular reviews are also being conducted to further strengthen healthcare services across the state.
