Telegram Returns to Google Play Store After Temporary Ban; Services Resume for Users Across India

Google has restored Telegram on the Play Store following the end of a temporary government-imposed restriction linked to NEET-UG exam security concerns. The messaging platform has gradually resumed services for users nationwide.

Telegram has returned to the Google Play Store in India after a temporary government restriction ended, allowing millions of users to once again download and access the popular messaging platform. The restoration comes days after authorities imposed an unprecedented short-term ban aimed at preventing the misuse of the app during the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination process.

Google reinstated Telegram on its Android app marketplace shortly after the government order expired on June 22. While some existing users had already regained partial access to the platform, the Play Store restoration marked a broader return of services. Reports indicated that availability on Apple’s App Store resumed later, following a brief delay.

The Indian government had directed technology companies to temporarily delist Telegram after officials alleged that certain channels on the platform were being used by organized groups involved in examination-related fraud. Authorities argued that the measure was necessary to protect the integrity of the NEET-UG re-examination, one of the country’s most important entrance tests for medical admissions.

The restriction, which lasted until June 22, was implemented under provisions of the Information Technology Act following recommendations from agencies overseeing the examination process. Officials maintained that the temporary action was a precautionary step intended to curb the circulation of leaked materials and misinformation before the re-test.

Following the successful completion of the examination, the government allowed the restriction to lapse without extending the order. Telegram’s return is expected to restore normal communication for its large user base in India, which relies on the platform for messaging, communities, education and business-related interactions.

The development highlights the growing challenges governments face in balancing digital freedom with concerns over cybersecurity, misinformation and examination integrity in an increasingly connected environment.
