Rapid Rescue Unit starts in Maval to respond quickly to human-wildlife conflicts with trained teams, better equipment and district‑wide expansion plans.

Pune | 09 February 2026 -A Wildlife Rapid Rescue Unit has been launched in Maval to strengthen the district’s response to rising human-wildlife conflicts. The unit is designed to provide rapid and coordinated interventions in emergencies involving wild animals, ensuring safety for both residents and wildlife in areas where forests and human settlements intersect.

The unit is equipped with specialised rescue vehicles, cages, handling tools, and other essential equipment, and teams have been trained to respond swiftly while minimising risks. Officials highlighted that timely interventions by trained personnel are crucial to preventing injuries to humans and wild animals, especially in conflict-prone zones. The Maval unit is the first of four planned rapid rescue units across the district, with additional units expected in regions including Theur, Baramati-Daund, and Bhor to ensure faster response times throughout Pune district.

The creation of the unit comes amid a rise in incidents of wild animals, including leopards and snakes, entering populated areas. The unit will focus on safe capture and relocation of animals and will also implement preventive measures to reduce human–wildlife encounters. Regular training sessions for forest officers and support staff are emphasised to maintain operational readiness and ensure safety during rescue missions.

Experts note that the deployment of well-equipped and trained rapid response teams can significantly reduce panic and injury during wildlife encounters. These units not only protect humans but also help conserve wildlife by enabling safe management of animals that enter human settlements. The initiative also aligns with broader conservation strategies, including public awareness campaigns and technology-driven monitoring of conflict-prone areas.

Authorities are optimistic that the new unit in Maval will serve as a model for other regions, enhancing the district’s capacity to handle wildlife emergencies efficiently. With the launch of additional units, residents in high-risk areas can expect faster responses, improved safety measures, and better coexistence between humans and wildlife, contributing to both community safety and wildlife conservation.
