Mumbai | May 6, 2026: The Maharashtra government is expected to begin a fresh round of teacher recruitment through the ‘Pavitra’ portal, with plans to fill at least 8,000 and up to 13,000 vacant teaching posts across the state. The development has brought relief to thousands of aspiring candidates and education service workers who have been waiting for permanent appointments.

According to sources in the education department, the recruitment process, which had been stalled for several months, is now gaining momentum. The education department has directed all schools in the state to publish advertisements for their vacant posts on the ‘Pavitra’ portal by May 31, 2026. This step is expected to clear the way for filling thousands of vacancies in Zilla Parishad schools, municipal schools, and private aided institutions.

In addition to existing vacancies, the department has decided to include posts likely to fall vacant due to teacher retirements by the end of May 2026. Schools have been instructed to upload vacancy details on the portal between May 1 and May 31. After this, eligible candidates will be able to fill their school preferences in June based on merit. The entire recruitment process will be conducted online, with officials claiming it will ensure transparency.

However, recruitment numbers have reduced due to the government’s “adjustment first, recruitment later” policy. Sources revealed that the state had initially planned to recruit nearly 40,000 to 45,000 teachers. But changes introduced in staffing approval norms on March 15, 2024, resulted in around 30,000 teachers being declared surplus across Maharashtra. The education department has decided to first adjust these surplus teachers, and only the remaining vacancies will be filled through new recruitment, leading to the reduced figure of 8,000 to 13,000 posts.

Meanwhile, a large number of candidates are waiting for appointments. Last year’s Teacher Aptitude and Intelligence Test saw 2.28 lakh registrations, with 2.11 lakh candidates appearing for the exam. Around 1.70 lakh candidates have completed the self-certification process and are now awaiting recruitment.

The government claims that recruitment through the ‘Pavitra’ portal will curb favoritism. Recruitment in local self-government institutions will be conducted purely on merit without interviews. However, private institutions have been allowed to call ten candidates per post for interviews.
