An Indian consortium led by Wipro, Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and RV College of Engineering has developed the country’s first complete driver-less car in Bengaluru, signalling a major leap in autonomous mobility.

Bengaluru |30 October ,2025:  India has made a bold stride into the future of mobility with the unveiling of its first fully indigenous driverless car. The landmark project is the outcome of a collaboration between Wipro, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), and RV College of Engineering (RVCE).

According to project leads, the vehicle is designed to operate without a human driver under a wide variety of Indian road conditions — an engineering challenge given the diverse terrain, traffic behaviour and regulatory environment. Sources say that the car uses cutting-edge AI algorithms, advanced sensors and V2X (vehicle-to-everything) communication systems.

Officials are billing this achievement as a competitive leap forward placing India alongside global players such as Tesla, Cruise and Waymo. The announcement included footage of the car navigating an urban test track in Bengaluru at low speed, following lane-marks and reacting to dynamic obstacles.

While exact commercial launch timelines remain under wraps, the developers have confirmed that further trials are underway and that regulatory clearance will shape the rollout. Experts say this initiative could accelerate India’s smart-mobility industry, boost domestic EV and autonomous vehicle supply chains and reduce dependence on imported technology.

India’s transport ecosystem is watching closely: if successful, this driverless car could reshape how Indians travel in cities and redefine the role of autonomous mobility in emerging markets.
