Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana Halts Sugarcane Transport in Ahmednagar, Demands Fair Cane Price from Factories

Farmers in Ahilyanagar Ghotan area, led by Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana, have stopped sugarcane transport to factories demanding ₹3,300 per tonne and clearance of pending dues from last season.

Ahilyanagar | November 7, 2025:  A major farmers’ agitation erupted in the Ghotan area of Shevgaon tehsil, Ahmednagar district, after members of the Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana stopped sugarcane transport to local factories. The protest comes amid growing anger over what farmers say are unfairly low sugarcane rates offered by mills.

Protesting farmers have demanded a payment rate of ₹3,300 per tonne, along with the immediate release of unpaid dues from the previous crushing season. Until their demands are met, they have vowed to continue blocking cane transport to factories.

Revenue officials and police teams, including Tehsildar Akash Dahadade and Police Inspector Santosh Mutkule, reached the site to negotiate with the agitating farmers. However, despite discussions, the protestors remained firm on their stand, refusing to resume transport operations.

According to the farmers, the current rates offered by some sugar mills do not cover the cost of harvesting, transportation, and labour. Many claim that even last year’s payments were delayed, pushing them into financial distress before the start of the new crushing season.

The agitation has led to several cane-laden trucks being parked along village roads as mills wait for the standoff to end. The farmers’ group has warned that the movement will intensify if the state government and sugar mills fail to respond soon.

This protest reflects the broader discontent across Maharashtra’s sugar belt, where cane growers are demanding fair and timely payments beyond the government’s Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP). The ongoing blockade could disrupt the start of the sugar-crushing season if the deadlock continues.
