FDA Suspends BigBasket Karve Road Outlet Over Expired Food, Pest Activity and Cold-Chain Lapses

Maharashtra FDA has suspended a BigBasket outlet on Karve Road after finding expired food, pest activity, storage issues and cold-chain lapses.

Pune, September 24, 2026: The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended operations at a BigBasket outlet on Karve Road in Sadashiv Peth after an inspection found multiple food-safety and hygiene violations, including expired food products, pest activity and deficiencies in cold-chain management.

The outlet, operated by Innovative Retail Concepts Private Limited, functions as a retail outlet as well as a storage, refrigeration, distribution and wholesale facility.

FDA officials inspected the premises on September 21 and reported several serious non-compliances under the applicable food-safety regulations. A hearing was subsequently conducted on September 22, following which the authorities ordered suspension of the establishment’s operations.

Expired and Damaged Food Found

According to the inspection findings, officials discovered expired and damaged food products at the premises. Inspectors also reported pest activity and storage-related deficiencies.

The FDA found problems with the segregation and storage of food products, along with shortcomings in maintaining appropriate temperatures for refrigerated and frozen items.

Cold-Chain and Hygiene Concerns

The inspection also identified deficiencies in temperature control and cold-chain management, which are particularly important for products requiring refrigeration or freezing.

The FDA’s action comes amid an intensified food-safety enforcement drive across Maharashtra, with authorities focusing on hygiene, storage conditions, pest control and compliance with food-safety requirements.

The Karve Road outlet was among establishments facing licence-related action following recent inspections in the Pune division. Other food businesses in the region have also faced action over alleged violations of prescribed food-safety standards.

Operations Suspended

Considering the reported violations, the FDA ordered the immediate suspension of operations at the establishment.

The action means the outlet cannot continue its food-related activities during the suspension period unless permitted under the applicable regulatory process.

The FDA has been stepping up inspections across Pune and Maharashtra, particularly ahead of the festive season. Recent enforcement drives have resulted in inspections, seizures and licence suspensions involving establishments accused of food-safety and hygiene violations.

The latest action serves as another reminder for food retailers and storage facilities to maintain proper hygiene, pest-control measures, product segregation, temperature monitoring and cold-chain records.
