School Bus Plunges into 150-Foot Gorge in Maharashtra’s Nandurbar — At Least One Student Killed, Several Injured
A school bus carrying tribal students veered off the Devgoi Ghat road in Nandurbar district and fell into a deep ravine; the tragedy claims one life and leaves multiple children injured.
Nandurbar | November10, 2025: A tragic accident shook Maharashtra’s Nandurbar district when a school bus carrying tribal students plunged nearly 150 feet into a deep gorge, leaving one student dead and several others injured. The incident occurred on the steep Devgoi Ghat section of the Akkalkuwa–Molgi road, a stretch known for its sharp curves and challenging terrain. The children were returning to their tribal ashram school after the Diwali break when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle at a dangerous bend, causing the bus to slide off the narrow hillside road.
Local villagers were the first to reach the spot, rushing down the slope to rescue the trapped children. Emergency responders later joined the efforts and transported the injured students to hospitals in Akkalkuwa and Nandurbar. According to initial assessments, one child died on the spot, while several others suffered fractures, head injuries and trauma. Some children remain in critical condition, prompting doctors to request additional medical support.
The crash highlights the immense risks faced by students who rely on long-distance travel through hilly tribal regions. Roads in these areas often lack adequate safety railings, warning signs and regular maintenance, increasing the likelihood of accidents. Early reports suggest the bus may have skidded due to the combination of a sharp downhill curve, narrow road width and possible speed misjudgment. Investigators are also examining whether overloading or mechanical issues contributed to the disaster.
Parents and community members have expressed deep shock and anger, demanding accountability from school authorities and transport officials. Many pointed out that tribal students frequently travel long distances under unsafe conditions, and such tragedies expose systemic gaps in rural transport safety. Local leaders have called for immediate audits of school buses, driver training certifications and road infrastructure across tribal belts of Maharashtra.
Road safety specialists note that Devgoi Ghat and similar routes require vehicles with enhanced braking systems, experienced drivers and strict adherence to speed-control norms. They emphasized the need for more stringent monitoring, installation of protective barriers and frequent patrolling on high-risk stretches. With tribal students depending heavily on such commuting routes, improving safety standards is crucial to preventing future tragedies.
