Nitish Kumar Likely to Be Next Chief Minister of Bihar, Signals From NDA Partners
NDA
PATNA, 16 November 2025 – After the NDA’s sweeping victory in the Bihar Assembly Election 2025, strong indications from within the alliance suggest that Nitish Kumar is poised to return as Chief Minister. Several leaders across the BJP, LJP (Ram Vilas) and HAM have publicly hinted that the mandate was secured under Nitish Kumar’s leadership and that he is the natural choice to head the new government. These early statements are being seen as deliberate signals that the alliance is leaning towards continuity rather than experimenting with a new face.
Chirag Paswan, whose party performed strongly, said that Nitish Kumar’s experience and administrative record remain invaluable for Bihar. Santosh Kumar Suman of HAM echoed the sentiment, stating that the people voted with Nitish as the face of the alliance, and the result should be respected. Sources familiar with internal discussions say that while the BJP has emerged powerful in the tally, it is unlikely to push for a different Chief Minister at this stage, given the need to keep the alliance stable after securing more than 200 seats.
Political observers note that Nitish Kumar’s long presence in Bihar politics continues to influence voter behaviour across regions and caste blocks. His administrative style and ability to navigate alliances have kept him relevant despite shifting political equations. Retaining him is seen as a strategic move to project unity, reassure voters and avoid friction among NDA partners during government formation.
Although the leadership decision has not been formally announced, senior figures indicate that the matter is nearly settled. The alliance is currently focused on cabinet distribution, power-sharing equations and identifying key portfolios. Formal confirmation is expected soon after the NDA’s joint meeting. Insiders say the BJP will likely secure major ministries, but the Chief Minister’s chair will remain with Nitish Kumar to maintain cohesion and prevent any perception of internal rivalry.
Opposition parties are watching closely, arguing that the NDA’s early signals undermine the idea of collective decision-making. They claim that the leadership choice appears predetermined despite the BJP’s numerical advantage. However, NDA leaders insist that the victory was achieved as a combined effort and that Nitish’s familiarity with governance makes him the most practical option.
As Bihar prepares for its next government, all eyes are on the final announcement. Whether the BJP chooses to increase its influence through cabinet control or maintain a balanced partnership with JD(U), Nitish Kumar’s return to the top post is emerging as the central storyline of the post-election phase. His leadership, once confirmed, will set the tone for policy direction, governance priorities and alliance dynamics in the coming years.
